The kindly story teller Uncle Remus tells a young boy stories about trickster Brer Rabbit, who outwits Brer Fox and slow-witted Brer Bear
Song of the South came out in cinemas in 1946. And only ever got a home release on VHS and LaserDisk. And hasn't been released since. This means that the only available versions are in 480p with mono audio. Well not any more! I've restored Song of the South in 4K (2880x2160) and colour graded the entire thing to the best of my abilities and given it a 5.1 surround sound mix as well as adding English Subtitles. and removed as much major damage as I could. As I said, the original was very low res so the quality may vary but it's as good as I could get it. Enjoy!
The full resolution version is called "QUICKTIME". "H.264" is the compressed version created by archive.org for the preview

Subject: Terrible quality
Subject: Terrible quality
After downloading the 24GB MOV file I think this restoration is horrendous. It looks like a cheap AI upscale was used, details are smoothed over and the in-betweens of animations are horribly blurred together. If you just want to watch this film and don't care about the quality just get the MP4. If you want a decent quality rip try searching for a 35mm scan, there's one in 1080p on rutracker that's around 19GB. The main audio track is in Russian but the second one is English so the film can be enjoyed in much superior quality.

Subject: Been trying to find this for years!
I have been searching for this film for years and was shocked to learn it was banned.
Look I totally understand that the back story to the film and what was going on at the time this film was made, but what people forget is, this film is viewed through a child's eyes. You don't see all the political side to it. I didn't even see colour or class. Just 3 friends, listening to a sweet funny man, with the happiest face and that uncle Remus smile. Then the Braire rabbit cartoons.
I remember hating the brothers and the mum more.
Also how can you forget those songs.
Will say one thing, I am sure the sing at the end changed, because I'm sure it was sung as the slave song "let my people go"
It may well be my age and not remembering and then maybe hearing "let my people go" someehere else.
I really enjoyed watching it again, it made me cry with the nostalgia, it's such a beautiful film..
For me adults have ruined this film from making it out to be a political thing.
Thank you to the poster, I can't wait to show this to my dad, he too has been searching for it, since we had it on VHS in the 80s.
I always remember the first time I watched it, I had just come out of hospital after having meningitis and laid up watching Disney films.

The coloring is way off in this. Everything has a darker or bluish tint to it. The previous Blu-ray compatible version is actually better, especially when it comes to color. Clarity on Notelu's is also just as good if not better in some areas. This looks like an upscale of a scan that is already out there.

I am still trying to download the torrent (actually torrent downloads, but the payload is hung up), but I will put in my $.02 anyway. I am so glad, and appreciative that someone (or some people) would do this amazing work to save this classic while DISNEY DOES NOTHING! Anyone who takes the time to actually understand US history would understand that this takes place in POST CIVIL WAR America, there are NO SLAVES portrayed in this movie, they are sharecroppers or household help! Get the F over yourselves!
You can take SPLASH MOUNTAIN away from us to KISS ASS, but THANK GOD we still have Song of the South!

Song of the South is a 1946 American live-action/animated musical film produced by Walt Disney and released by RKO Radio Pictures, based on the Uncle Remus stories collected by Joel Chandler Harris. It was Disney's first film to feature live actors, who provide a sentimental frame story for the animated segments. The film depicts the character Uncle Remus, cheerfully relating to several children, including the film's protagonist, the folk tales of the adventures of anthropomorphic Br'er Rabbit and his enemies, Br'er Fox and Br'er Bear. The film's song "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah" won the 1947 Academy Award for Best Song,

Subject: Beautifully restored... Now if only Disney would release it in North America
I grew up in the 90's watching songs like Zippity Doo Dah on Sing-Along-Song tapes but with none of the context of the actual film. Here on Archive.org was the first time I've actually had the opportunity to watch the film in its entirety. It's an excellent piece of film history. Amazing that this was Walt Disney's first live-action film. Let's not forget, this is NOT a documentary, it was a fictional film and a musical. Obviously it was going to depict things in an artificially rosy light. As all musicals do. Do you honestly think that chimney sweeps in Edwardian England went around dancing and singing happily as they toiled away on the roof tops at night? Most of them were child laborers working for pennies a day. The Music Man was a happy little film about a man committing felony fraud on an entire town's population.
As has already been stated in prior reviews, this film was based on existing content, a collection of stories - most of which were from African American families living in the south during Reconstruction. The stories, the way people are speaking, the depiction of conditions are all directly taken from those stories. This was not Disney's attempt to gloss over the past in the 40's. This was Disney bringing a series of classic stories and novels to the big screen just as he did with virtually ALL of his early films. I'm honestly pleased he included American folk tales along with the litany of European ones represented in all his other works.

I think we all end up being very biased when we try to evaluate Disney movies—perhaps because they will always be inevitably connected to the nice memories of our first viewing experience as children.
Said that, I do agree with the idea that SONG OF THE SOUTH has its own merits, particularly in terms of animation and its combination with live action. However, it is also a film that suffers from a poorly written script, with secondary storylines left undeveloped (e.g.. the unexplained separation of Johnny's parents, his dad's mysteriously controversial articles). It also fails to combine the Disney fary-tale animated stories and the period movie a-la GONE WITH THE WIND, which appear forcefully glued together. In this sense, while it might be a memorable film for many of us, it is not exactly "a film that has a place in film history"—in the sense of a film that marked the evolution of cinema as an art form (in fact, most film history books don't even mention it). Regarding its place in American History, SONG OF THE SOUTH is well known for its infamous contribution to the attempt to downplay, sugarcoat, and even deny the atrocities of slavery. In fact, it is a film that disneyfies the incarceration, exploitation, and abuses suffered by black slaves in the South of the US by replacing them with the false narrative of a well integrated, friendly society where the white enslavers appear to be kind, polite and loving towards their black "neighbors."
